As cooler weather approaches, it’s time to protect your above-ground pool from harsh winter conditions. Winterizing properly ensures your pool stays clean, damage-free, and ready for swimming when warm weather returns.
Start by giving your pool a thorough cleaning. Skim off leaves, vacuum the bottom, and brush the walls to prevent stains and algae growth. Next, test and balance the water’s pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Adding a winterizing chemical kit—usually including algaecide and shock—helps keep the water clear through the off-season.
Lower the water level slightly, about 4–6 inches below the skimmer, but avoid draining the pool completely. Water provides structural support, especially for above-ground models. Once the level is set, disconnect hoses, pumps, filters, and skimmers. Drain them fully to prevent freeze damage and store them in a dry place.
Install a winter pool cover designed for above-ground pools. A tight, secure cover keeps out debris and blocks sunlight, which can fuel algae growth. Use cover clips or a cable and winch to keep it firmly in place, even in strong winds. For added protection, consider using an air pillow beneath the cover—it reduces ice pressure against pool walls.
Finally, check your pool periodically during the winter. Brush off heavy snow, remove large debris, and ensure the cover remains secure.
With these simple steps, your above-ground pool will survive the winter intact and be ready for an easy spring opening.
