Woodpiles: how to prevent pests

Storing firewood is a common necessity for many homes, particularly those using wood-burning stoves or fireplaces. However, woodpiles can also become a convenient shelter for pests, ranging from termites and carpenter ants to rodents and spiders. Here are some practical steps to help prevent pests in your woodpile:

1. Elevate Your Woodpile: Keep firewood off the ground. This not only helps to discourage pests from taking up residence but also promotes air circulation, which dries out the wood faster, making it less inviting for pests. Use racks or pallets to raise the wood at least a few inches above the ground.
2. Maintain a Safe Distance: Place your woodpile at least 20 to 30 feet away from your home or any other structures. Pests like termites and ants can easily transition from an outdoor woodpile to the wooden structures of your home if the wood is stored too close.
3. Cover the Woodpile: Use a cover to protect your woodpile from the elements, but ensure it is designed in a way that allows air circulation. A tarp can be used, but should only cover the top and allow the sides to remain open. This prevents moisture from being trapped, which can attract pests.
4. Use Well-Seasoned Wood: Freshly cut wood retains more moisture and is more likely to attract pests. Using well-seasoned wood, which has been dried for at least six months to a year, is less appealing to pests.
5. Rotate the Stock: Regularly use the oldest wood first. This practice prevents the wood from sitting too long and becoming more susceptible to pest infestations.
6. Inspect Regularly: Periodically inspect your woodpile for signs of pest activity. Look for burrowing holes, sawdust-like debris, or the pests themselves. Early detection can prevent a minor issue from becoming a major infestation.
7. Keep the Area Clean: Remove any debris or vegetation around the woodpile that may serve as a habitat for pests. Keeping the area clean and tidy reduces the chances of pests settling in.
