Snow sliding off a roof can be a very dangerous thing. Many have been hurt when unexpectedly an avalanche falls on their head as they are walking below the roof. This can happen when the temperature changes and a formerly solid sheet of snow and ice start melting and sliding.
Of course, the best solution would be to try to keep your roof clear of snow and ice, but this is not always possible, especially on multi-story buildings.
One safety measure that some homeowners have taken to prevent this from happening is the installation of a snow guard.
Snow guards are installed at the bottom of a roof, and they are designed to break up the snow and ice into smaller pieces. They can make your home safer in the wintertime as long as they are installed properly. You shouldn’t install them on any extended roofs, such as on top of a deck or something similar since this could add too much weight to the roof.
